Reasonable selection of CNC service machining tools


When machining parts on CNC machine tools, there are generally two situations. The first situation: there is a part drawing and blank, and a CNC machine tool suitable for machining the part needs to be selected. The second situation: there is already a CNC machine tool and a part suitable for machining on that machine tool needs to be selected. Regardless of the situation, the factors to be considered mainly include: the material and type of the blank, the complexity of the part contour, size, machining accuracy, quantity, heat treatment requirements, etc. In summary: it is necessary to ensure the technical requirements of the parts and produce qualified products. This is conducive to improving productivity.


The processability of CNC machining parts


The analysis of the processability of service CNC machining is very extensive. Here, we will only analyze it from the two aspects of the possibility and convenience of CNC machining.


The size data on the part drawing should conform to the principle of programming convenience

  • The dimension labeling method on the part drawing should adapt to the characteristics of CNC machining. On the CNC machining part drawing, the dimensions should be labeled with the same reference or directly given coordinate dimensions. This labeling method is not only convenient for programming, but also facilitates the coordination of dimensions. It brings great convenience in maintaining the consistency of design benchmarks, process benchmarks, inspection benchmarks and programming origin settings. Since the designer of CNC machining parts generally considers more aspects of assembly and other usage characteristics in dimension labeling, he/she has to adopt a locally scattered labeling method, which will bring a lot of inconveniences to process arrangement and CNC machining.


  • The conditions for the geometric elements that make up the part contour should be sufficient. When programming manually, calculate the coordinates of the base point or node. When programming automatically, all geometric elements that make up the part contour must be defined. Therefore, when analyzing the part drawing, it is necessary to analyze whether the given conditions of geometric elements are sufficient. For example, arcs and straight lines, arcs and arcs on the drawing are tangent, but according to the dimensions given on the drawing, when calculating the tangent condition, they become intersecting or non-intersecting states.


The structural processability of each processing part of the part should conform to the characteristics of CNC machining

  • The inside and outside of the part should preferably use unified geometric types and dimensions. This can reduce the specification of cutting tools and the number of tool changes, and make programming convenient and improve production efficiency.


  • The size of the fillet of the inner groove determines the diameter of the cutting tool, so the radius of the fillet of the inner groove should not be too small. The processability of OEM CNC machining parts is related to the height of the machining contour, the size of the transition arc radius, etc.


  • When milling the bottom flat surface of the part, the radius of the groove bottom fillet r should not be too large.


  • A unified reference positioning should be adopted. In CNC machining, if there is no unified reference positioning, the position and size of the contour on the two surfaces after processing will not be coordinated due to the reinstallation of the workpiece.


CNC machining parts preferably have suitable holes as positioning reference holes. If not, process holes should be set as positioning reference holes (such as adding process ears on the blank or setting process holes on the residual material to be milled in subsequent processes).
